What’s in a Name?

Does your school name still fit? Institutions evolve over time, and sometimes a name may no longer reflect who you are today.

While changing a school’s name can upset some people, there are ways to smooth the process.

  • Develop a thoughtful articulation to explain the need for the change;
  • Engage various groups beyond the board (think parents, alumni, donors, faculty, and staff) in the conversations;
  • Listen closely to concerns and ideas with an open mind and demonstrate that they are being heard;
  • Announce the new name with a full explanation for how and why you reached it, notifying close-in constituents before you go public; and
  • Plan the roll out of your new name with the highest priority changes coming first.

Our client outside of Chicago, Rosary High School, recently changed its name to Rosary College Prep to better reflect the college preparatory nature of the educational experience they offer girls in grades 9-12. The new name also helps set them apart from peer schools in the area.
